Hunter 85 in No More Room in Hell 2: What Ammo It Uses, Stats & Where to Find It
Quick answer: the Hunter 85 is a bolt-action heavy rifle chambered in .308 Winchester — the same ammo the M14 Battle Rifle uses. It one-shots normal zombies with a headshot, needs two headshots on red zombies, takes a rifle suppressor, and since the 0.9 Revelation firearm rework it has 35 body damage, penetration 3 and a 100 m maximum range. The trade-off is a small magazine, a slow bolt cycle and heavy ammo. If you searched “hunter 85 ammo”: pick up every .308 box you see — NMRiH2 ammo is calibre-specific, and .308 only feeds the Hunter 85 and the M14.
What ammo does the Hunter 85 use?
.308 Win, full stop. Ammo in No More Room in Hell 2 is calibre-specific (see the full weapons list), so the Hunter 85 shares a pool with exactly one other gun:
| Calibre | Guns that use it | Loadout box (community wiki) |
|---|---|---|
| .308 Win | Hunter 85, M14 Battle Rifle | 10 rounds · Account Level 43 · 3,000 Credits |
Two practical consequences. First, if a teammate is running an M14, you are competing for the same boxes — decide who carries the .308 before you split up. Second, .308 is heavy: the 0.9 rework made larger calibres weigh more in the inventory on purpose, so the “ammo weight tax” is the most common complaint about this rifle in community tier lists. The Vulture and Scavenger skills soften it.
Hunter 85 stats (1.0 Armageddon)
| Stat | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Bolt-action heavy rifle (the game’s own “Heavy Rifles” class) | 0.9 patch notes |
| Calibre | .308 Win | Wiki + patch notes |
| Magazine | 6 rounds (community wiki figure — official notes don’t list capacities) | Wiki |
| Body damage | 35 (was 75 before 0.9) | 0.9 patch notes |
| Headshot | Kills a normal zombie in one, a red zombie in two; the exact headshot number is not published | Wiki |
| Penetration | 3 (was 2) — punches through helmets and armor plates | 0.9 patch notes |
| Maximum range | 100 m (was 150 m) | 0.9 patch notes |
| Initial spread | 4 (was 8) | 1.0.4.0 hotfix |
| Suppressor | Yes — rifle suppressor | Wiki |
| Optics / gun-light | Not listed for the Hunter 85; rifle optics fit the Rochester 1873, MC-15, M7A1 and MP5 instead | Wiki |
Reading the numbers: 35 body damage means body shots are a waste against 100-health normal zombies — this is a headshot rifle, and the 0.9 developer note said as much (damage was made consistent within a calibre so that “you can clearly feel the quality jump” between guns sharing it). Penetration 3 is the highest tier in the game, tied with the M14 and M7A1, which is why the Hunter 85 is the cheap answer to armored zombies (see the zombie types page for what armor does).
Where to find the Hunter 85
- Field loot. Firearms spawn in stash rooms and weapon caches at Points of Interest; 1.0 adjusted Tier 3 weapon spawns “to favor later stages of maps”, so expect the good rifles deeper into a run rather than at the first POI. Since 1.0, guns can also spawn with a variable amount of ammo already loaded, scaling with difficulty.
- Loadout. Players on the subreddit report the Hunter 85 as a purchasable loadout weapon in 1.0 (we haven’t confirmed the price, and the launch-week notes say some high-power items were deliberately removed from loadouts, so check your own menu). The .308 ammo box unlocks at Account Level 43 per the community wiki.
Strengths and weaknesses
Why people carry it
- One headshot on normal zombies and two on reds from any range that matters.
- Penetration 3 — the same as the M7A1 — for helmets, shields and the tougher 1.0 zombie types.
- Takes a suppressor. A suppressed Hunter 85 barely wakes the map thanks to the 0.9 perception changes (suppressed shots “dramatically reduce” detection range and require line of sight).
- 1.0.4 halved its initial spread, so the first shot goes where you aim.
Why people drop it
- Bolt action: every miss costs you a full cycle while the horde closes.
- Small magazine and heavy ammo — you cannot hoard .308 the way you hoard .22 LR.
- No optic slot on the community wiki’s list; you are shooting irons in the dark.
- Once an M14 drops you get the same damage with a 20+1 magazine and semi-auto fire, so the Hunter 85 is usually a mid-run bridge, not the endgame gun.
Hunter 85 vs the other heavy rifles
| Rifle | Calibre | Magazine (wiki) | Body dmg · Pen (0.9) | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hunter 85 | .308 Win | 6 | 35 · 3 | Cheap, quiet, precise; slow |
| M14 Battle Rifle | .308 Win | 20+1 | 35 · 3 | Same damage, semi-auto — the upgrade |
| Rochester 1873 | .357 Magnum | 5 | 20 · (unchanged) | Lever action sharing revolver ammo; takes optics |
The whole class, the skills that buff it (Steel Chamber, Penetrating Shot, Eagle Eye) and the Rifles-vs-Heavy-Rifles distinction are covered on the heavy rifles page.
