Gruber 922 in No More Room in Hell 2: .22 LR Rifle Stats, Ammo & Whether It Is Worth Carrying
Quick answer: the Gruber 922 is No More Room in Hell 2’s .22 LR semi-automatic rifle — a 25-round magazine, almost no kickback, and it accepts every attachment type (suppressor, optic and gun-light). The catch is damage: since the 0.9 Revelation rework a headshot does 35 and a body shot does 5, so it takes three headshots to drop a 100-health normal zombie. Treat it as a quiet, controllable “plinker” for picking off lone zombies with plentiful ammo, and swap it the moment a .308 or 5.56 rifle drops.
Where the Gruber 922 came from
The 922 was added in the 0.4.2 Reanimation++ update (June 2025) as the game’s first .22 calibre weapon. The developers described it in the update post as a rifle whose “magazine holds 25 rounds” with “very little kickback”, supporting every attachment type — and it was added to the Loadouts menu together with .22 LR ammo boxes in the same patch. It is the rifle in a three-gun Gruber family:
| Gruber | Class (0.9 patch-note grouping) | Ammo |
|---|---|---|
| Gruber Mk VII | Handgun (added in 0.5.0 Broadway) | .22 LR |
| Gruber 922 | Rifle | .22 LR |
| Gruber Ranch | Rifle (semi-auto DMR) | Listed as .22 LR by media weapon lists; official notes don’t state it |

| Body damage | 5 (was 25) | 0.9 patch notes |

Shots to kill (from the official damage numbers)
The 1.0 notes give zombie health as 100 for normal zombies, 70 for Shamblers and 130 for Primes. Against a 35-damage headshot that works out to:
| Target | Headshots needed | Body shots needed (5 dmg) |
|---|---|---|
| Shambler (70 HP) | 2 | 14 |
| Normal zombie (100 HP) | 3 | 20 |
| Prime (130 HP) | 4 | 26 |
Body shots are effectively not an option. Community tier lists also report that the 922 has no armor penetration, which matches the patch notes: the 0.9 rework raised penetration on the M7A1, MC-15 and Gruber Ranch but lists no penetration value for the 922. Against helmeted or armored zombies, switch weapons.
Is the Gruber 922 worth using?
Yes, as a quiet sidearm-rifle — no, as a primary once anything better exists. The arguments in its favour are real:
- Ammo you can actually stockpile. .22 LR is light and common. Players on the subreddit describe running the 922 specifically so they can hoard the “really light and common ammo” instead of fighting teammates over .308.
- Suppressed and steady. A suppressed 922 with a red dot is one of the easiest guns in the game to keep on target, and suppressed fire barely registers with zombie perception since 0.9.
- Every slot. It is one of the few rifles that takes a gun-light as well as an optic and a suppressor, so it doubles as a flashlight platform.
And against it:
- Three headshots per normal zombie is slow, and the 0.9 note that ammo should be “difficult to hoard and impactful when found” was aimed at exactly this kind of spam.
- No penetration and 5 body damage mean it is useless against armor and useless in a panic.
- Post-1.0 community rankings place it in the bottom tier of firearms, while the Gruber Ranch (130 headshot damage, penetration 2) and the .308 rifles sit near the top.
Our own placement is on the weapons tier list.
